As a mom you quickly learn that simple things become indulgences. As a new mom taking a shower was the sweetest reward. Even now that my children are older showers (especially ones that aren’t punctuated by screaming children) are still a special treat.
Another simple indulgence: hot coffee. I love my coffee, but I rarely am able to enjoy an entire hot cup of coffee without interruption. I am a complete coffee snob so reheating coffee is a big no no in my book. Each morning I brew 4 cups of coffee; I am lucky if I drink half a cup before my cup turns cold and the coffee maker turns off.
This weekend is the first weekend in a quite awhile that my children have been with their dad and I have had absolutely nothing to do. I decided that this weekend would be all about indulging myself. I can’t afford to do much, but even the most simple things are rewarding.
Yesterday, I drank coffee, nice hot coffee and surfed the internet — for hours. I then took a scalding hot shower and used Trader Joe’s Sea Salt Scrub. This product is amazing! I felt so luxurious after I got out of the shower, as if I had spent the day at a spa. (I’m planning on buying this stuff as Christmas presents for some of my family members)
The afternoon was spent shopping. Shopping with little kids in tow is not fun. I’ve come to dread shopping. I can only go to one or two stores before a complete meltdown ensues. Yesterday, I went from store to store to store. No whining or complaining. I watched other harried parents dragging their worn out children from store to store and thought to myself “this single mom business has some perks!”. Totally renewed my love of shopping — this could be dangerous.
It has been frigidly cold here in the Northeast and I was trying to find a pair of warm, snugly boots to keep my feet warm. I desperately want a pair of UGGS, but they are not in the budget. I couldn’t find what I wanted and ultimately gave up the search. (I’m hoping, maybe, Santa will bring me some UGGS. A girl can hope, right?)
I did, however, discover that ULTA has come to my area. I <3 Ulta. Ulta has been in NJ (where my family lives) for awhile, but just recently made it’s way up north. Ulta is like Sephora’s less expensive little sister. I adore Sephora, but it’s way too pricey for me. I needed some new makeup and I got a special discount as well as a bag full of free samples. I was in heaven.
Kohl’s was having some amazing sales. Normally, I’m not a fan of Kohl’s, but I was looking for boots for the girls and they were having a huge sale in their Women’s department. I got a bunch of new (warm!) sweaters and didn’t spend much money at all.
I also picked up a new book, from the library, that I am eager to start reading. A friend recommended it to me and little did I know that it is the story of a single mom.
Today, it’s back to reality; grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry and getting ready for a busy week. I also need to take my kiddos to the doctor to get their flu shots (oh joy!).
I had an indulgent Saturday and now I feel like I’m ready to take on anything! It was just what this mama needed.
